Istanbul Kultur University Department of Architecture held an online geometry workshop for 6 hours on Saturday, November 14, 2020, led by Dr. Suzan Sanlı Esin and Lecturer Pelin Çetken. After the presentations and discussions, a 3-stage study was carried out on a “leaf” image. In the first step, students were asked to look at this leaf photo and create a lifelike image of it. In the second step, it was tried to break this leaf into geometric shapes and represent it as a whole consisting of geometric planes. With this process, each student created their own repertoire of shapes of the geometric parts that make up a leaf. In addition, a set of rules was determined by analyzing how these forms came together. In the last step, it was aimed to abstract a leaf and produce a new leaf in its own language with the form repertoire and set of rules obtained independently of the existing leaf. The necessity of a main idea to guide this abstraction act was emphasized. Thus, 11 unique leaf figures with their own story were produced. After the workshop, the participants were asked what they learned from this process consisting of geometric drawing experiments, and what the contribution of investigating the order behind the irregular appearance in nature was in the context of architectural design.
